Whether a country's fast food is dominated by drive-thrus is not a question about food. It is a question about how much land a restaurant can afford, how people move around, and whether the numbers on a plot of ground work out.

The land maths

A drive-thru needs a lane long enough to stack cars without blocking a road, space to enter and exit safely, and usually a car park as well. That is a large footprint, and in most of the world's dense city centres it is either unavailable or worth far more as something else.

So the pattern follows land economics almost exactly. Markets with cheap peripheral land, high car ownership and low-density suburbs get drive-thrus. Markets with expensive land, high density and strong public transport get in-store and delivery instead.

How the lane shapes the menu

A drive-thru imposes real constraints on what can be sold, and those constraints show up on the board.

  • It has to survive a bag. Items that go soggy, collapse or leak in transit do not last on a drive-thru menu.
  • It has to hold heat for the time between window and destination.
  • It has to be eatable one-handed in a driver's seat, which favours wrapped and handheld formats over anything requiring cutlery.
  • It has to be assembled fast, because the lane is measured in seconds.
The wrapper is not packaging. It is part of the product design.

That is one reason burgers, wraps and fries are the backbone of drive-thru-led markets, while markets without drive-thrus carry far more rice and bowl formats that assume a table.

Why service time is measured in seconds

Drive-thru throughput is one of the most closely tracked operational metrics in the industry, and small differences compound: a few seconds per car, multiplied across a peak hour and thousands of sites, is a meaningful amount of revenue.

Kitchen layout, the number of windows, where the payment happens and the design of the order screen are all optimised around that number. It is also why drive-thru menus tend to be shorter than in-store ones - Every additional choice costs time at the speaker.

What is replacing the classic lane

The two-window drive-thru is slowly giving way to a more mixed model built around ordering in advance. Dedicated collection bays, app-ahead lanes and parking spaces reserved for pick-up all do the same thing: move the ordering step out of the lane so the lane only handles handover.

Practical notes

  • Drive-thru menus are often shorter than in-store menus at the same restaurant. If you want something unusual, go inside.
  • Late-night service in many markets is drive-thru only, with the dining room closed.
  • Prices are normally identical between the lane and the counter, unlike delivery platforms.

What our data can and cannot show

We publish menus and prices, not service formats - We do not hold which outlets have drive-thrus, because that is outlet-level information that changes constantly and we could not stand behind it.
