How Fast-Food Franchising Actually Works
Almost every restaurant you think of as a chain is owned by someone else entirely. What the franchisee actually buys, and why it explains the price on the board.

Menus and prices in 13 markets, 674 items tracked.
Krispy Kreme's proposition is a production line in the shop and a doughnut served warm - Theatre that most chains cannot replicate because most chains receive finished product rather than making it.
That requires a genuinely different estate structure: a mix of full production stores and much smaller retail points supplied from them, including large cabinet networks in supermarkets and petrol stations.
Its four products in our price index are all drinks - Mocha, latte, hot chocolate - Rather than doughnuts, which localise almost entirely. We hold 571 items across ten markets.
Each market has its own board. Prices are shown in local currency and are not comparable across rows - Use the index below for that.

In 1937, Vernon Rudolph opened the first Krispy Kreme shop in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Armed with a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe, he began by selling his confections to local grocery stores. The irresistible aroma of freshly baked doughnuts soon drew passersby, prompting Rudolph to cut a hole in the wall to serve customers directly - A humble beginning that laid the foundation for a beloved brand.
Krispy Kreme's menu celebrates the art of doughnut-making. The iconic Original Glazed® doughnut remains a fan favorite, known for its light, melt-in-your-mouth texture. Complementing this classic are a variety of flavors, including Chocolate Iced with Sprinkles, Raspberry Filled, and seasonal specialties that capture the essence of each occasion. Paired with a selection of beverages - From rich, freshly brewed coffee to indulgent lattes - Every visit offers a moment of delight.
Beyond its delectable offerings, Krispy Kreme is committed to making a positive impact. Since 1955, its fundraising program has empowered schools, churches, and charitable organizations to raise millions for their causes. Initiatives like "Dough-nate for a Doughnut" further exemplify the brand's dedication to community engagement, supporting children's health and well-being. Through these efforts, Krispy Kreme continues to spread joy and support where it's needed most.
From its modest origins to its global presence today, Krispy Kreme remains devoted to delivering moments of happiness, one doughnut at a time.

Localisation is not adding a novelty item. It is a staged process with a predictable sequence, and the menu data shows exactly how far each market has travelled.

Menu boards are designed documents, not lists. Where the money items sit, what the ordering of panels is doing, and how to find the price you actually want.
