How Fast-Food Franchising Actually Works
Almost every restaurant you think of as a chain is owned by someone else entirely. What the franchisee actually buys, and why it explains the price on the board.

Menus and prices in 8 markets, 587 items tracked.
Papa John's has no products in our price index despite 421 items across seven markets - The largest brand on this site with nothing comparable at all.
The reason is naming. Papa John's builds market-specific pizza names almost everywhere it operates, so nothing meets the same-name-in-four-markets threshold. Domino's and Pizza Hut both keep enough shared names to qualify; Papa John's does not.
That is worth stating because it is a limitation of our method rather than a judgement on the brand. A pizza chain can be genuinely international and entirely unpriceable by a name-matching index, which is one of the honest constraints set out in our methodology.
Its positioning is ingredient quality - The pepperoncini and garlic dip included with every pizza are a small signature kept for decades.
Each market has its own board. Prices are shown in local currency and are not comparable across rows - Use the index below for that.

In 1984, John Schnatter transformed a broom closet in the back of his father's tavern in Jeffersonville, Indiana, into a makeshift pizza kitchen. Selling his beloved 1971 Camaro Z28 to purchase used pizza equipment, he began crafting pizzas for the tavern's patrons. The overwhelming popularity of his pizzas led to the opening of the first official Papa John’s restaurant. Over the years, the brand expanded rapidly, establishing thousands of locations worldwide, all while maintaining a commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.
Papa John’s menu showcases a dedication to fresh ingredients and bold flavors. Signature offerings include the "Shaq-a-Roni" pizza, a collaboration with basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal, featuring extra-large slices loaded with pepperoni and cheese. For those seeking variety, options like the Zesty Italian Trio and the Fiery Buffalo Chicken pizza provide a flavorful experience. Beyond traditional pizzas, the menu features items such as Papa Bowls - Crustless combinations of meats, vegetables, and cheeses - And Papa Bites, bite-sized treats available in flavors like Jalapeño, Chicken Parmesan, and OREO Cookie.
Papa John’s commitment to community extends beyond its culinary offerings. Through the Papa John’s Foundation for Building Community, the company supports initiatives focused on youth leadership, food security, and equality. Collaborations with organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and local food banks aim to make a positive impact in neighborhoods across the globe. By investing in these programs, Papa John’s strives to be more than just a pizza provider - It seeks to be a valued community partner.
From its humble beginnings in a small Indiana tavern to its global presence today, Papa John’s Pizza continues to prioritize quality, innovation, and community engagement, delivering more than just meals to its customers.

Localisation is not adding a novelty item. It is a staged process with a predictable sequence, and the menu data shows exactly how far each market has travelled.

Menu boards are designed documents, not lists. Where the money items sit, what the ordering of panels is doing, and how to find the price you actually want.
Price reports are signed, reviewed by a person, and earn points when accepted - So they need an account. Signing in takes one tap and brings you straight back to the report.
