How Fast-Food Franchising Actually Works
Almost every restaurant you think of as a chain is owned by someone else entirely. What the franchisee actually buys, and why it explains the price on the board.

Menus and prices in 10 markets, 386 items tracked.
Shake Shack has 23 products in our price index - Joint-most of any brand - From just 299 items across nine markets. That ratio is the highest on the site, and the explanation is the same as Five Guys': a deliberately short menu means the same items appear everywhere rather than being displaced by local ranges.
The ShackBurger spans about $5.10 to $14.79, and the SmokeShack about $7.05 to $16.09, across nine markets each.
The brand began as a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park, and the queue is arguably part of the product. Outside North America it is positioned firmly as a premium purchase.
Each market has its own board. Prices are shown in local currency and are not comparable across rows - Use the index below for that.

Every item across every Shake Shack menu, mapped onto our dish taxonomy.
In 2001, a modest hot dog cart appeared in New York City's Madison Square Park. This cart, operated by restaurateur Danny Meyer and his Union Square Hospitality Group, was part of an effort to support the park's first art installation. The cart's popularity grew over three years, leading to the opening of the first Shake Shack kiosk in 2004. Initially intended as a single-location venture, the establishment's success spurred expansion, and Shake Shack now operates over 400 locations worldwide.
Shake Shack's menu centers on American favorites made with premium ingredients. The ShackBurger, featuring 100% Angus beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and ShackSauce on a potato bun, exemplifies this commitment. Other offerings include crinkle-cut fries, hand-spun shakes, and frozen custards made with real cane sugar and cage-free eggs. Each location may offer unique menu items tailored to local tastes, reflecting the establishment's dedication to quality and community.
Shake Shack emphasizes community engagement through initiatives like donating 5% of sales from specific menu items to local charities. The establishment also supports local artists and hosts events to foster neighborhood connections. This approach aligns with its mission to "Stand For Something Good," encompassing quality food, community involvement, and environmental responsibility.
From its origins in a city park to its presence in cities worldwide, Shake Shack remains committed to serving high-quality food and nurturing the communities it calls home.

Localisation is not adding a novelty item. It is a staged process with a predictable sequence, and the menu data shows exactly how far each market has travelled.

Menu boards are designed documents, not lists. Where the money items sit, what the ordering of panels is doing, and how to find the price you actually want.
